Newark’s Civic Leadership Organization
We are all here, together, because we believe in the fundamental mission of inclusive economic growth for all of Newark. It is also an organization of diverse leaders, from arts, culture, education, business, real estate, tech, community, and healthcare institutions, who themselves come from diverse backgrounds. Building this volunteer leadership organization to contain the multitudes of all those doing good work in Newark is an ongoing commitment and task of the Alliance and each Member.
Mission
The Newark Alliance, through the combined strength and collaboration of its Members, drives inclusive economic growth for all of Newark.
Vision
To work collaboratively to cement Newark’s status as one of America's most diverse, prosperous, exciting, and equitable cities, serving as a national model for inclusive economic growth.
History
The Newark Alliance was founded in 1999, developing out of a shared commitment to the city that its leaders have held since Newark was founded in 1666. The Alliance is only a more recent example of this tradition, with similar organizations dotting the early 20th Century as the city modernized and others forming after the 1967 Rebellion, such as the Greater Newark Urban Coalition. The Alliance and its Members are proud to be part of Newark’s journey, standing on the shoulders of giants.
Organization
The Newark Alliance is incorporated as a 501(c)(3). We are governed by a Board of Directors, which meets six times a year, and is made up solely of Newark Alliance Members. The general Membership of the Alliance traditionally meets quarterly, joined by Mayor Ras J. Baraka and his Senior Staff. Members Meetings are a place where best practices can be shared and accelerated across the broader Membership, as well as a forum for discussing and setting strategic priorities for Newark.
